The Dandenong Market has been the cornerstone of Dandenong community life for almost 150 years! It is Melbourne’s second oldest and second largest market, supporting local farmers and small businesses in the area since 1866.
In 1926, the Market located to its existing site on the Corner of Clow and Cleeland streets, and in 1956, the livestock section of the market moved to another site in Dandenong. This year, the Dandenong Market will celebrate its 150th birthday.
When did the Dandenong Market first open?
The Dandenong Market officially opened for the first time on 10 October 1866, on the intersection of Lonsdale and McCrae Streets. Early market traders sold livestock, fruit, dairy products and other farm produce. Before long, the stock sales were surrounded by local farmers selling surplus produce, as well as a multicultural array of merchants selling an amazing variety of goods.
